--

Term limits are not the answer - what if we actually get someone that does good for the people and the community?  Involvement of the people is necessary.  People need to know WHO is running their local government and WHAT they are doing and whether they are doing it well.  Don Lindly has been in office far too long and is no longer productive to the county's best interests.

MAKING CONTACT QUESTION FOR THE WEEK OF 10-11-10:

RECENTLY, SOUTH COUNTY HAD THE LARGEST TSUNAMI DRILL IN OREGON HISTORY.  EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS IS IMPORTANT.  MANY PEOPLE PARTICIPATED…OTHERS THOUGHT THE WHOLE THING WAS SILLY.  MAKING CONTACT WANTS TO KNOW… IF YOU DIDN’T PARTICIPATE….WHY?

From K & C In Tidewater:

I live in Tidewater, so I didn't participate, but I was angry about community reaction to the drill.  Here are three reasons I can see why people in Waldport did not participate:

Reason #1:  Let's treat a drill like the real thing.

My son gets out of morning kindergarten at 11:40.  I called the school to find out what arrangements were being made to accommodate the kindergarten pick-up/drop-off.  They said everything would be fine to come and get him at the usual time.  When I went to pick him up, they had the road blocked at the bottom of Crestline so that pedestrian traffic could walk safely up the hill.  They also had Range Drive closed.  I had to drive all the way to Wakonda Beach road to come in from the backside.  Seriously?!?!  They're going to block the roads to safety in a real tsunami?!  After all, a lot of us carry our emergency supplies in our cars, and I'd rather not leave it all at the bottom of the hill to be washed away in the tsunami.

Reason #2: If the businesses had taken it seriously, more people in the community would have followed suit.

A few examples: 1. The school, and apparently the school buses ran as usual too.  2. I went into Clark's market early in the morning.  I asked the clerk what she would have to do for the drill, and she said she'd have to stay in the store and take care of customers.  3. The Waldport farmer's market was going strong all day, and no one closed up shop to participate.  4. Ray's Market was still open for business, with customers coming and going throughout the drill.

Basically, everything was business as usual.  Shouldn't local businesses take the lead in community events?  They should have policies and procedures in place in case of a real tsunami - for example, do the employees really know what to do in case they have to shut the store and leave in a real emergency?  I'm sure that if businesses closed temporarily, so no one could actually go to the store during the drill, more people would have participated.  They're not going to lose any business if every business in town is closed for the drill.  It's not like the community didn't have notice - the signs announcing the drill were out for a week beforehand.

Reason #3:  People should know what the procedure is.

When I asked around before the event, no one knew what was going on, or what they were supposed to do.  And I didn't know you weren't supposed to drive.  Apparently there is still a lot of confusion about what to do in an actual emergency.
