To answer the question directly: Yes the parade detector made the right decision on not allowing the so called Veterans for peace in to our parade. The Lincoln County Democrat committee is really to blame as they tried to sneak these agitators into their parade spot by inviting them in and not letting the Parade Committee know what they were up to. A note to the Lincoln county Democrats is don't invite outside agitators into our community to take away from our wonderful LOCAL celebration of LOYALTY TO THIS COUNTRY AND TO OUR MEN AND WOMEN IN UNIFORM. Agitate some where else!!! We can tell the group in not legitimate, when they go away howling like little babies then start calling City Hall, The Chamber of Commerce and selected business in this community and threatening them with some kind of boycott, just because they didn't get their way. Also the Newspaper should get rid of the editor, since she once again decided to print this non story on the front page on the Lincoln City News times just to smear the character of this community and create this firestorm.
Newport citizen
Deadlines are deadlines. No group should be barred if their entry is on time and complete. If one group joins another group they should just represent the group they are joining, not bringing in another message.
-newport
Most of the local community supports the volunteers including Patty Louisiana who upheld the parade rules. This is a family event that shows our community loyalty to the military and veterans groups. The code pink and peace activists who came mostly from the valley should not be allowed in the parade. Last year Code Pink had signs with photographs that were offensive to many along the parade route. There are plenty of opportunities for peace activists to demonstrate, just not in the Newport Loyalty Days parade. (I doubt that the Portland parades or the Rose parade would allow this group to march and demonstrate either).
-newport
I guess I will be the one to deviate. I feel the Veterans for Peace have the right under the constitution to voice their opinion. I'm sorry that the excuse was a deadline to deny them entry in the Loyalty Days Parade. They could have allowed them to march. Just because it was for peace doesn't mean that they are against the troops. I'm against this stupid war and I support our troops. I am a former Desert Storm peacetime veteran. I served in early 1991 on a US Air Force Base in Washington. If they would have needed me at that time I would have gladly served no matter if I believed we belonged or not. Should I be denied an opinion just because I'm a veteran that doesn't believe in this unnecessary war? Not allowing the veterans for peace to march in the parade is just a right-wing political excuse. I thought Oregon leaned toward the left.

MAKING CONTACT QUESTION FOR THE WEEK OF 07-02-07:
WHEN SAM CLEMENS PAINTED THE MONA LISA ON A HILLSIDE ON HIS FARM LAST SUMMER, HE CREATED A LOT OF CONVERSATION, AND SOME CONTROVERSY. HIS LATEST PROJECT IS CAUSING CONCERNS BECAUSE IT IS A 140-FOOT LONG PICTURE OF HIS WIFE, LYING NUDE, ON A COUCH. MAKING CONTACT ASKS: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS ROADSIDE ARTWORK?
We have been in total awe of Sam's Clemens paintings. They are beautiful as well as inspirational. The Mona Lisa, because of her historical significance and world-wide notoriety, was our favorite. It was like seeing an old friend in a new and unexpected way. She was delightful. The nude has less appeal for us, but we appreciate it for Sam's resolve to exercise his freedom of expression. With Independence Day here, we applaud his American spirit. Finally, we think that the orange barriers are absurd. What other visual experience should now be barricaded off due to the human desire that draws us toward beauty? The drive down our own breath-taking Oregon coast? Thank you, Sam Clemens, for the wonder and smiles. Don't be offended at the barricades, they are only protecting people from themselves.
R.S Family
I am torn about this I believe that he has chosen to express his freedom of speech on his private property, however, I think we are lucky that he chose to paint this AFTER school was let out for the summer and we all know how dangerous it was last year when the Mona Lisa was there with all the rubber-neckers trying to catch a glimpse as they are driving by at 55 mph. Now that it's a naked lady I believe that there is a greater risk to commuters along that stretch of highway.

MAKING CONTACT QUESTION FOR THE WEEK OF 07-09-07:
THE CITY OF NEWPORT RECENTLY DECIDED TO ABANDON THE IDEA OF AN EVENTS CENTER. OUR QUESTION THIS WEEK ASKS IF YOU THINK THE EVENTS CENTER WAS A GOOD OR BAD IDEA FOR THE CENTRAL COAST.
Ah 500 hundred words are so few!!!!!
The recent decision by the City Council/ Urban renewal Agency, to abandon the Convention Center/ Expo center was a bad day for Newport and it's economic future. This idea was generated over 30 years ago and the original idea was to have it placed in South Beach. In the 80's the idea came up again, but because of in-fighting of Hotel owners, who were on the city council at the time the Performing Arts center was built on the site of the then proposed Convention Center location.
Finally in late 90's the chamber of commerce brought the convention center idea back to the table for the Urban renewal and city council to reevaluate. The timing was good as a recession was in full tilt tourism was at an all-time low due to the departure of KEIKO, it could of been and would of been built and operated with no additional taxes levied on Newport citizens while bringing visitors to Newport year around as the Seaside Convention center does for Seaside. It is unfortunate that the finically ailing Aquarium, through its board (which is run by a private non profit group on PUBLIC property) wants all the availability room tax funding from the city for it's operation, then set out to kill the convention center program, so that the funding for the Convention center would be available to the Aquarium it's also to bad that they have been sucessful.
The abandonment of the project is a decision that was made by a council that has no leadership, vision, nor guts, to do the right thing, in helping strengthen Newport's year around economy. Newport city council and management, lacks the will and vision to make this a great community and economically sound city in Oregon.

MAKING CONTACT QUESTION FOR THE WEEK OF 07-23-07:
THE SPRAWL OF URBAN GROWTH BOUNDARIES, MORE PEOPLE MOVING THE CENTRAL COAST AND CONTINUED HOUSING & BUSINESS CONSTRUCTION. MAKING CONTACT ASK YOU: HOW CAN CITIES CONTINUE TO KEEP UP WITH THE GROWING NEED FOR FRESH, CLEAN WATER FOR IT’S CITIZENS?
Actually no city in Lincoln County has increased it's urban growth boundary. There have been a few adjustments as Newport just finished but there they traded poor development land for more developable land. What we see is infill and in the cities and some areas of the county that were designated for housing. Now more to the point how will they meet the water needs of all the projected growth coming our way. Some predict a county population of about 125000 people by 2050.
Lincoln County already has a serious water issue, that is not being taken care of at this point. Lincoln City recently made a deal with Kernville Water district to buy water from them but that only is a short term fix. Seal Rock Water district has NO water rights and is dependent on Toledo for water. Toledo has an ample amount for the time being. Waldport and Yachats are near maximum consumption .
Newport has plenty of water at this time but they need a new water plant so they can meet demand in the summer only. The rest of the time they have adequate facilities. But in the long haul no city is making any effort to secure any future water needs or development. A couple of years ago Newport working with Lincoln city developed a plan the would meet their water needs until the end of the century by building 2 small dams on Rocky Creek ( on Cape Fowelweather) where no salmon have existed for over 45 years due to US 101 blocking passage. This project was expensive but considering the alternatives and the possibility that Newport, Lincoln City, Depot Bay, Kernville Water District, Gleneden Beach Water District, Otter Crest Water district and Seal Rock Water district could all meet their LONG term water needs the cost would of been about equal to development on single sources for each City or Water Districts. but since their have been political changes in LC and Newport no one wants to take up the challenge and will let the problem grow until it can't be ignored and houses and businesses can't be built or expanded. Get used to buying HIGH PRICED WATER if you can get it.

Freedom of expression is a wonderful thing.....a right we all have. I believe the Clemens work is art. The highway department should improve the highway pullouts...perhaps as a "viewpoint". The Mona Lisa was awesome...as would be the Twin Towers, Abe Lincoln, Jesus, Praying Hands and so on. Perhaps the nude of his wife is a bit of a stretch for the average mind to accept but we must admit it is "art" and it is very well done.
Thanks for the opportunity to express ourselves.

LINCOLN COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT RECENTLY GOT IT’S REPORT CARD, AND IT LOOKS REAL GOOD, WITH IMPROVEMENT ALMOST ALL ACROSS THE BOARD. MAKING CONTACT ASKS THIS WEEK, ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THE SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT & SCHOOL BOARD AND THE WAY THEY HAVE DONE THEIR JOBS?
I think school board members and officials are doing the best they can with what they have to work with. It is a shame the smaller schools, mostly in outlying areas are being shut down. I praise the Siletz Tribe and the Eddyville folks for doing what they did to have their schools. The Toledo situation was a horrible decision...to not have a grade school. Personally I think Newport having 2 grade schools is not cost effective either(it is funny though that two grades schools within a mile of each other are rivals and one is considered "the school to go to" and the other is "the layman's kids school".
I think before any major decisions are made....the general public should have public input meetings and have the right to contribute to those decisions.

WITH ALL THE SEVERE WEATHER LATELY, MAKING CONTACT ASKS WOULD YOU PAY EXTRA TO HAVE UTILITIES PLACED UNDERGROUND IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, TO MAKE SURE THE LIGHTS AND THE OTHER PUBLIC UTILITIES STAYED ON AND PROTECTED?
Things to consider related to underground services:
Most transmission lines, electric or media are overhead, so you could still be out of service.
Grade levels can change altering the appropriate depth of the cables perhaps even exposing them.
Underground cables can be nicked or damaged by either homeowners or contractors causing failure then or at a later date.
Locating faults, digging up and repairing underground equipment failures can be time consuming. Overhead systems can be visually inspected allowing the trouble shooting and repair assessments to be completed more quickly.
Costs associated to changing could be from both the utility companies as well as contractors who may have to change equipment at the home or business to bring in the utilities underground.
A utility customer could be spared the added problems associated with overhead services to the home where trees in their immediate area came down and pulled services away from the property but underground service can not guarantee uninterrupted services here at the coast where high winds and trees present an on going threat to utility systems.

MAKING CONTACT QUESTION FOR THE WEEK OF 02-11-08:
MAKING CONTACT ASKS YOU THIS WEEK, IF YOU WERE A LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSON, COUNTY COMMISSIONER, SENATOR, STATE REPRESENTATIVE OR OTHER POWERFUL PERSON, HOW WOULD YOU HANDLE THE PROBLEM OF INCREASED USE OF METH AND OTHER DRUGS IN OUR SOCIETY?
I have personal experience with the methamphetamines. I have watched my significant other and my own son almost destroy themselves with that drug. They are both in recovery and doing well, no relapses. I do know our American laws that are tougher on the chemicals that they purchase to manufacture the stuff is making it harder to do it in our country. However, the other countries like Mexico don't have the regulations and all the drugs are coming from these locations now. In fact because I saw the lifestyle I know that a lot of the migratory hispanics are the ones that are the new "drug dealers" of this poison. I would put tougher regulations on those coming into our country. I am not a PREJUDICED person I love all nationalities. I am very intrigued with culture from everywhere, however, we all must look at the fact that the Mexican drug CARTELS are controlling the methamphetamine production and smuggling market these days. We open our doors for them making it easier for them to come here and bring their poison to our country and loved ones. It would be my goal as a Representative of the people of the United States to ensure that "new laws" restricting the migratory immigration of just anyone without proper clearance would be put into vote. It would also be my responsibility to inform the public of this information.
This weeks question is what to do about the Meth problem.
In a word...EFT. Emotional Freedom Technique
In a nutshell...."The cause of all negative emotions is a DISRUPTIONin the body's energy system." This includes all addictive behavior.
"If I were Mayor of this City" I would get EFT information out to allthe treatment centers, therapist, schools etc. Speaking of schools, EFT
can also get rid of depression & suicidal thoughts. Events such as these could all but be eliminated with this simple & free technique. This technique can be taught quickly & easily so the individual can use itat home to stop cravings, change mood, shift defeating thoughts etc.
Thank you for the chance to speak out . Hopefully, SOMEONE will be listening.
EFT, truly can and does, save lives!
