MAKING CONTACT QUESTION OF THE WEEK OF 1-23-06:

RECENTLY, TOLEDO MIDDLE SCHOOL CHANGED THE NAME OF THE SCHOOL MASCOT AND TEAMS NAME FROM TROJANS TO WILDCATS.  WE’RE LOOKING FOR YOUR OPINION ON THE NAME CHANGE.

The Trojans were first class warriors of the ancient world, and

More recently, a first class athletic program at the university of southern california.

Strong traditions to follow.

Please….tell me this local team’s name was not changed because some sexually overcome ninnies associated the name with the ever popular brand of condoms.

Ron M.
Lincoln City

What more can you take from kids?  You take their programs (band, art, sports, etc), you take their schools (Mary Harrison closing and proposed closure of Arcadia), now you take their identity too!

Whether or not principal JD McMahon liked the Trojan is unimportant.  A group of kids actually petitioned to keep the Trojan as their mascot and their wishes were ignored. They just wanted to keep some of their traditions alive.  It was one of the few things that they had left to hold onto...

Signed,

A sad parent

I am amazed that a Principal at the Middle School has the right to change a school's mascot without the communities thoughts or opinions even being considered. There is a lot to be said for tradition and history. If Mr. McMahan lived in Toledo, and became an active member of the community, he might have an understanding of how our community feels about all of the changes that have been occurring in our town. The powers that be at LCSD have already closed one of our schools, and are looking to close another within the next 2 years....please don't change what little we have left! The Trojan Mascot has been in existence since the 40's...is this another one of those PC(politically correct) decisions?
Mary Toy-Young
Proud parent of a Toledo Trojan!

I am a student from Toledo Middle School. I dislike the fact that Mr. McMahon has changed the mascot. I do not believe that Mr. McMahon has a valid reason to change it anyways. I am one of the kids who is doing the patition.I believe that since the Trojans have been here for so long that it should stay. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Isaac Martin
Toledo Middle School

The Trojan Mascot has been a part of our community since the 1940's. In 1978 the Toledo Jr. High School burned to the ground, along with an actual Trojan Helmet that was on display at the school and many other displays of memorabilia. I have written letters to Mr. McMahon regarding his lack of keeping the community informed of this change and his reasons for changing it. My son and his friend started the petition to have the mascot changed back to the Trojans. That petition has not been presented to Mr. McMahon yet.Mr. McMahon has stated his reasons for this change in a letter to me and anyone interested in seeing this letter may contact me at trojan_pride1945@yahoo.com. I am urging everyone who feels that this change was unnecessary to please either write a letter to Mr. McMahon or to call the Toledo Middle School and speak with him personally.
Thanks!
Kristi Martin,
Toledo

I have been a member of this community for 53 yrs. I graduated from Toledo and as far back as I can remember, we have always been the "Toledo Trojans". Why should it be changed now? Anything that has ever been important to Toledo has been taken away in some manner or another. It was bad enough when they closed Mary Harrison, and then burned downed Arcadia, it makes me question "What will be next?" Will we be bussinng our kids to Newport because of school closures. This is just not right and I think that the community should have had a say in these things. Me and my children attended schools in Toledo and now my grandchildren are attending schools in Toledo. I for one would like to see my grandchildren graduate from Toledo and I would like my grandchildren to be proudly known as "THE TOLEDO TROJANS"!!!!!

PRESIDENT BUSH PLANS TO CUT LINCOLN COUNTY TIMBER PAYMENTS IN HALF.  THE TIMBER PAYMENTS BILL, PASSED IN 1993 GIVES COUNTIES CASH WHEN LANDS ARE TAKEN OUT OF SERVICE TO PROTECT WILDLIFE, OR ENCOURAGE FOREST GROWTH.  UNDER THE ORIGINAL BILL, THIS MONEY WAS TO BE PHASED OUT IN 2003.  OUR QUESTION THIS WEEK IS, ISN’T IT TIME FOR LINCOLN COUNTY & OREGON TO STOP LOOKING TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TIME AND AGAIN FOR CASH?

As matters stand, the prediction for a third year of very low returning Chinook to the Klamath River MIGHT POSSIBLY Require a closure OR NEAR-closure of the 2006 salmon season off nearly all of Oregon. The closure would be intended to prevent catch of the Klamath salmon, in the hope of beginning to rebuild what all agree is a severely depleted stock.  WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS?

AS OF LAST WEEK, THE PRICE OF A GALLON OF GASOLINE IN LINCOLN CITY WAS $2.39 A GALLON. IN NEWPORT, THE PRICE TOPPED OUT AT $2.62 A GALLON. oUR QUESTION THIS WEEK IS, IF GASOLINE WERE 30 CENTS A GALLON LESS IN A COMMUNITY 25 MILES AWAY FROM WHERE YOU LIVE, WOULD YOU DRIVE THERE TO SAVE MONEY AT THE PUMP?

Yes! I will drive a few extra miles to save @ $0.30 per gallon on gas. Over time, it adds up. Perhaps the "service" stations in Newport and Toledo will get the message if enough driver start doing the same. Enough is enough!!!

R.c.

Yes, I would and do drive to Lincoln City to purchase cheaper gas when time allows it! We drive to Philomath/Corvallis to fill up our dual tank diesel truck : ) No need to be taken advantage of : )

An appeal of a controversial proposed 20-foot-tall sign in front of the Imagine That Adult Superstore on Highway 101 IN LINCOLN CITY is now out of the hands of the city and will be decided in Lincoln County Circuit Court. OUR QUESTION THIS WEEK IS, WHY DO YOU THINK THIS BUSINESS HAD TO GO TO COURT?

what ever happened to the 1st. admendment????. It seems  to me that this country is heading the way of the Roman Empire, To much church, and not enough personal rights.  "Imagine That " has ever right to exist. There are many in Lincoln City who support this, if not, the store could not exist. If the bible thumpers, want to go after something that is REALLY harmful to this commutity, why not go after the stores that sells items that are used for drugs??? Surely that ( I feel ) is much more harmful to the commutity. than SEX !!!!!
