MAKING CONTACT QUESTION OF THE WEEK OF  10-10-05:

NEWPORT MAYOR MARK JONES IS NOW INVOLVED IN A RECALL EFFORT.  OUR QUESTION THIS WEEK IS, IF IT GETS TO A VOTE, HOW WILL YOU CAST YOUR BALLOT, RECALL, OR NOT.

If it comes to a vote i will vote no on the recall. mayor jones has done
nothing that would require a recall, he has only been a loyal public servent
in a non paid position that has done and will continue to do what is best
for the city. this reacall effort has been mounted by small people with
there own private agenda and problem with the mayor. it is not a problem of
the mayor doing the right thing its an issue of the recall board members not
getting something they wanted and taking it to an ugly and unnecessary
place.

MAKING CONTACT QUESTION OF THE WEEK OF 10-17-05:

NEW BANKRUPTCY LAWS TOOK EFFECT RECENTLY, MAKING IT MORE DIFFICULT FOR CONSUMERS TO HAVE DEBT ERASED, AND MAKE A CLEAN START. HOW WILL THIS NEW LAW EFFECT YOU?

The making contact question this week does not really pertain to me for I have no credit card debits for I keep mine paid off.

However, I think that people should be responsible for incurred debt. It is not the banks fault these folks over charged on their cards and the banks should be able to recoup some of their money. With these new laws maybe people who abuse their cards will think twice before running up huge debts then thinking oh well I will just declare bankruptcy and get out of it only to turn around and do it again.

MAKING CONTACT QUESTION OF THE WEEK OF  10-24-05:

THE U.S. COAST GUARD HAS TIGHTENED TATTOO, PIERCING AND BRANDING RULES FOR NEW RECRUITS.  THE IDEA IS A MORE PROFESSIONAL APPEARANCE.  WE’RE LOOKING FOR YOUR THOUGHTS ON THESE NEW RULES.

For Centuries our warriors have scarred and marked their bodies before and after battle. Personally I would rather the folks that I am sending into battle be as frightening as possible. Most battles are won in the head before a single blow is struck.
In today's world what is "professional"? Personally I have no issue with my physician, lawyer etc with tattoos and or pierceings. As long as it does not hinder or distract from performing their duties. Not so long ago earrings in males was not accepted. Now you see them everywhere.

THE MOST SACRED OF TAX BREAKS, THE MORTGAGE INTEREST DEDUCTION THAT MAYBE HELPED YOU BUY YOUR HOME, COULD VANISH IF PRESIDENT BUSH AND CONGRESS FOLLOW THE ADVICE OF THE TAX ADVISORY BOARD.  WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS POSSIBLE ACTION?

I was listening to you and Sandra this morning as usual and heard your response to the “Making contact” question for the week.

All I can say is: I fully agree with your input of “PU” 100 gazillion %. We should vote every legislator out of office if this passes or even comes to a vote.

MAKING CONTACT QUESTION OF THE WEEK OF  11-21-05:

ATM fees can quickly add up, but did you know you can be charged even if you don't get any money out?  It's called an ATM denial fee.   It basically works like this: if you try to take money out of your account, but you don't have enough or if you've gone over the amount you can take out in one day, the banks will charge you a fee, usually $1.50. OUR QUESTION THIS WEEK IS, WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOUR BANK WERE TO IMPLIMENT THIS FEE

MAKING CONTACT QUESTION OF THE WEEK OF 12-05-05:

YOU’VE PROBABLY HEARD BY NOW THAT BAY BRIDGE ENTERPRISES INC. WANTS TO OPEN A SHIP BREAKING OPERATION IN NEWPORT.  OUR QUESTION THIS WEEK IS:  APPROVE, OR DISAPPROVE…AND WHY.

I fully support the ship breaking company coming to Newport. It would bring a much needed shot in the “arm” to Lincoln County employment wise without interfering or competing with any local businesses. Assuming what was printed in the paper is true environmental wise; I can see nothing to be concerned with. There are risks in everything we do, and this is a good risk.

I would hate to see Newport shun a company like this especially after we courted them so heavy; due to the “black eye” message to would send to other prospective businesses wishing to locate in the area. The risk it worth it and the positive employment long-term is nothing but a win win for Lincoln County.

Bay Bridge is a good company with an excellent environmental record for the type of work they do. Most Environmental groups support the recycling of the military mothball fleet here in American where environmental standards are higher than around the world. Newport could use the jobs (over 100 direct and another 100 indirect in the community) with a payroll and benefits to the workers it would be over 4 million NEW dollars into our local economy and since Lincoln county leads the coast in highest unemployment you'd think we want the jobs.
When you get past the wild rhetoric and look at the facts this company does what they say. They have a clean environmental history and record, the state of Oregon recruited them to our state after back ground checks and the state is offering financial assistance to the port and company for them to locate here. I believe that there are a couple of fishing boats sunk up stream of the port sight one with fuel and oil and batteries still on board and 2 boat repair facilities up stream with little environmental over site polluting the bay but that should be over looked while trying to not let this company come to town.
If the Port commissioners' can't do a simple land lease for economic development, then they should resign. Of course with 4 out of the five commissioners involved in the fishing or boat industry, I'm sure they will only protect their own at the expense of the rest of the port district tax payers.

LATELY, THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL HIGH SPEED CHASES INVOLVING POLICE AND SUSPECTS IN LINCOLN COUNTY.  WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE A LAW IMPLEMENTED THAT SAYS IF A SUSPECT INITIATES A HIGH SPEED CHASE, LAW ENFORCEMENT CAN CONFISCATE THE CAR, AND THE SUSPECT GETS AN AUTOMATIC JAIL SENTENCE?

The following is an unsolicited comment, but asked to be posted:

I know that this isn't one of the topics, but I had to get in my say. I will get right to the point.  Pres. Bush and his spying on our own citizens.  I think that he has way over stepped his authority.  He is an elected official, and he needs to be held accountable for not following the law.  I don't like the idea of wire tapping and such, but if it is done legally then there would be no question of what he is doing.  He didn't do it legally.  No court ordered warrants.  He is not above the law, any regular Joe who tried to do the same thing would be arrested and possibly jailed.  Thank Goodness he can't be re-elected.

MAKING CONTACT QUESTION OF THE WEEK OF 1-2-06:

AN ADULT VIDEO STORE AND ARCADE HAS OPENED IN NEWPORT ON HIGHWAY 101.  WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS NEW BUSINESS?

Our family does not want to see this store, or the one in Lincoln City, set up anywhere in our comminutes. It’s bad enough that the area has gone down hill from casinos, drugs and swap shops, but to "encourage" more bad behavior by example and expose our children to more poor examples of life style choices is not something we need here. It’s depressed enough community - people are trying to make ends meet and don’t need more negative things to deal with.

The Walckers

More power to them if they want to have an adult shop.  This country was founded on free enterprise and freedom of expression.  I would never patronize that kind of business and, at the same time, would not condemn anyone from doing business there.  If narrow-minded want this establishment shut down, then that goes against the principles our country was founded on.  We would turn into a dictatorship.  If these people don't like it, don't go there.
