VOTERS THROUGHOUT LINCOLN COUNTY ARE BEING ASKED TO VOTE ON A MEASURE THAT WOULD INCREASE THE TRANSIENT ROOM TAX BY $1.00. THE PROCEEDS ARE SLATED TO GO TOWARD IMPROVEMENTS AT THE LINCOLN COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS (OR COMMON GROUNDS). MAKING CONTACT WANTS TO KNOW IF YOU APPROVE OF THE PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS.

A listener form Yachats responds:

When you vote on the transient room tax increase, you are voting on two things: 1. to increase a lodging tax that will put the county rate higher than any city in the county and higher than adjacent counties; and 2. to approve improvements at the Newport fairgrounds and the construction of a new meeting center that will operate with a $30,000 to $100,000 projected deficit every year. County property tax payers already subsidize the fairgrounds, which has lost its relevance and no longer serves the whole county as a gathering place. The new meeting facility will compete with existing businesses with meeting and conference spaces. It makes no sense to continue subsidizing indefinitely a failing concept. The county has numerous other options including selling the property and reducing county property taxes, creating affordable housing at the site, or turning the property over to Newport to stop the constant financial bleeding, for example. VOTE NO AND STOP CREEPING TAX INCREASES AND SUPPORT OF FAILING VENTURES.

IN LINCOLN CITY THE CITY COUNCIL HIRED AN OUTSIDE ATTORNEY TO CONDUCT AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE ACTIONS OF THE MAYOR. THIS HAS BEEN DUBBED AS THE POPPE REPORT AND COST THE CITY SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS TO CONDUCT. MAKING CONTACT WANTS TO KNOW IF YOU THINK THAT CITY FUNDS SHOULD BE SPENT ON INVESTIGATIONS INTO CITY OFFICIALS.

Those who decided to persecute a good man are an embarrassment to the city.  To be clear, they spent tens of thousands of hard-earned, taxpayer dollars. For what? To discover that an email was sent to a news reporter.  I guess our national security must have been compromised!  The one who elected to make the Poppe Report public, after agreeing to keep it private, is two-faced.  The council had just agreed to let him off the hook for working 9 years in the city without obtaining the required business license.  Glass-house stone throwing?!  Don Williams is a fine person who has totally invested in this city.  He provides jobs to locals. He gives of his time freely to addiction recovery programs, has a heart for the homeless and lets them use his facilities when needed.  He has shown an incredible ability to be gracious, even though city councilors treat him with amazing disrespect.  It will take a long time for those councilors to live down their nastiness.  It seems to me that those liberals who claim to be so progressive might learn a little tolerance of others, who might just have a different point of view.  In answer to your question regarding using city funds to investigate city officials, the answer is “no’.  City funds should not have been spent on what I consider to be a trivial issue.  Those who voted to fund the investigation, in my opinion, are negligent to have spent taxpayer dollars. Thank you for the forum ~~~ Lincoln City resident

From Another Lincoln City Listener:

The city should be using funds to benefit citizens who pay taxes
I am against the use of funds to create power trips for  city employees.  Attorney fees are not a benefit for our city.
