The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners RECENTLY approved an agreement between the County and the Trueman Center allowing the health and human services financial staff to take care of the remaining outstanding billings for the center. The Trueman board is trying to wind up operations and clear any debt so they can be ready to make a decision about the long term future of the facility. MAKING CONTACT ASKS THIS WEEK, DOES LINCOLN COUNTY NEED THE TRUEMAN CENTER, OR CAN OTHER AGENCIES FILL THE NEED.

-----I recently heard the comments on making contact on KYTE fm and had to respond for the trueman center which I attented in 2006/ 2008.The program completely changed my life after being a chronic drug addicted alcoholic for 25 years.

Looking back at all the struggles and also the determination to never give in, or give up has payed off more than I can share, the accomplishment that one does with ones life, is felt so strongly by not only oneself, but reflects even more so in the eyes of the people that see the change,Everyone i come across that saw me before,is so open to aknowledge me in praise and support, that alone is the strength one need some days, but as we all know it ultimately lays in our hands, our future, our destiny, our never ending quest to better ourselves for us,and also for everyone who is in our lives.I could never have reached this stage if not for the trueman center.

To look at my daughters and grandchildren family and my spouse who are my whole life, and see in them the bright positive inspirational look on their faces, mearly is reflecting who I am now, The greatest thing of all is,I get to remember now, things I had sumhow forgotten back when I was in my 'demon',drugs and alcohol are a very strong thing to overcome, but I know now that dedication to the cause, continued reassurance by even myself as well as others, has been the backbone of my cleanliness and sobriety. The program at trueman during the time period I attended saved my life and saved my soul !

MAKING CONTACT QUESTION FOR THE WEEK OF 10-29-12

VOTERS WILL DECIDE ON THE Children's Trust of Lincoln County. MAKING CONTACT WANTS TO KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS BALLOT MEASURE, AND HOW YOU’RE VOTING ON IT.

To some, supporting the Children’s Trust of Lincoln County is a matter of economics – society saves in the long run by providing services to children now. They cite studies showing that early childhood education saves taxpayers $16 for every $1 invested, outside of school development programs, $8-12 per $1, etc.

To me, it is more a matter of giving children the opportunities they deserve to succeed and become the positive force in society we all want them to be (hey, they will run this country soon!). It is also the right thing to do.

In November, we have the opportunity to provide a boost to essential services for children, for the minimal cost of about two lattes per month($5.80/month for a $200,000 home). This will create a local, stable, efficient source of funding for youth programming.
In Lincoln County, the needs are great: rates of poverty, child abuse, and homelessness are well higher than the state averages. Parenting is a tough, stressful task when you’re struggling to make ends meet with multiple part-time, minimum wage jobs. Having a free after school program to rely on, so you know your kids are safe while you’re still at work, reduces stress. So does affordable childcare, precious little of which currently exists. And reduced stress makes for better parenting, and thus for more successful kids.
Many safeguards are in place to ensure the Trust’s funds are spent responsibly, and I urge everyone to read the details on its website: childrenstrustoflincolncounty.org.

The Trust is modeled on the Portland Children’s Levy, which, after the first five years of operation, received overwhelming voter support for another five years. I have every confidence we’ll see the same thing happen in Lincoln County five years from now. And, I'll be happy to see my tax dollars going to this important, local purpose.

Thank you,
Chris G.

Taxes are always tough to consider, but here’s why I hope you will join me in voting yes on measure 21-144, Children’s Trust of Lincoln County: Investing in Our Children’s Future.

1. You get a huge return on your investment. There is much research available showing that for every $1 spent investing in children can return anywhere from $3 to $16.

2. Approving the Children’s Trust shares the investment in our children with the many second homeowners in our county. These part-time residents enjoy the benefits of Lincoln County and can share in taking care of our kids.

3. Every kid deserves the same chance to grow up safely and supported so they can be successful in school and beyond.

4. The Trust is accountable to you. It will help kids throughout the county and will only invest in proven and successful programs. An Allocation Committee that will review all of the applications for funding will be comprised of citizens from all areas of the county.

Finally, approving the Trust says a great deal about who we are as a community. It’s our chance to take care of our own. Let’s do the best by our 8,000 kids so all of them can become successful contributing members of society. It’s up to all of us to see that they all have what they need to do just that.

More information about the Trust can be found at www.childrenstrustoflincolncounty.org. Please vote yes on Measure 21-144.
